Sedation Dentistry
At Sunridge Dental Care, several options are available to help create more relaxed, comfortable dental visits.
- Oral Sedation: A simple pill provides a mild to moderate level of sedation. This helps you relax and better handle any discomfort you may have experienced during treatment. Typically, you’ll feel somewhat drowsy, but should still be aware of what is happening around you.
- IV Sedation: A safe and effective medication is injected into your vein as a way of providing moderate-to-high levels of sedation. It goes into effect very quickly, and our experts will be able to continually adjust it to provide you with the appropriate level of sedation. While you will most likely be conscious, you may not recognize your surroundings; however, you should return to normal shortly afterwards.
- General Anesthesia: This type of sedation is best used when our experts are conducting extensive treatments. When general anesthesia is provided, the goal is for you to fall asleep entirely. You will not experience any pain and will be unable to remember the procedure taking place. Afterwards, it may take you several hours to return to normal, and you will be required to have another party provide transportation.
- Local Anesthesia: Used strictly for the management of pain, a local anesthetic is applied directly to the site of a dental procedure in order to provide a numbing effect. While this type of sedation is great at preventing pain and discomfort while work is being performed, it will not actively reduce a patient’s anxiety.
Dentists use the pain and anxiety control techniques mentioned above to treat millions of patients safely every year. Even so, taking any medication involves a certain amount of risk. It is important to understand the risks and benefits involved in any dental treatment so that you and your dentist can make the decision that is right for you.
